I had the honor of leading a workshop on observational studies to my fellow hospital pharmacists yesterday. From the beginning, my objective for this workshop was to enable attendees to interpret observational studies on their own by the end of the session. A lofty goal, but I believe that I’ve provided them the tools to do so. The slides for this presentation can be found here. The source for most of the information for this presentation come from the new NERDCAT-Obs, which was updated specifically for this session.

Our final NERD of the 2013-2014 year will take place this Friday, May 23rd at 6-8pm in CP room 112.

We’re very excited to be discussing the increasingly prevalent and popular network meta-analysis (i.e. I know A vs B and A vs C, but can I say something about B vs C?).

Check out the following 2013 Lancet article for a head start:

Lancet. 2013 Aug 31;382(9894):769-79. doi: 10.1016/S0140-6736(13)60900-9.

Our first NERD meeting of 2014 will take place on Friday, January 24th from 6-8pm. We’ll be in the CP conference room 112, as usual.

We’ll be switching up from RCT appraisal and instead looking at a systematic review regarding intensive vs. conventional glycemic control (Hemmingson B, et al. BMJ. 2011;342:d6898). We’ll walk through the appraisal with the help of NERD’s brand new critical appraisal tool especially for systematic reviews: the NERDCAT-SRMA!

Hope to see you there!Image

The next meeting of NERD will take place on Friday, October 25th from 6-8pm in the CP conference room 112 (same place as last time!).

Subgroup analysis will the be the theme of the upcoming meeting. We’ll start with a mini-lesson addressing the analysis of subgroups within a trial, to be followed by the discussion of an older yet still “hot” topic – the HOT Trial (Hansson L, et al. Lancet. 1998;351:1755).

See you there.

Please join us for an antiplatelet-themed meeting of NERD this Friday, August 30th from 6-8 pm. We’ll be in the Centennial Pavilion conference room 112-2.

Articles for discussion: The SPS3 antiplatelet trial (NEJM 2012;367:817), and the CHANCE trial (NEJM 2013;369:11).

All are welcome.

Why not check out the RCT 2.1 NERDCAT beforehand! Found in the Critical Appraisal Tools link above.
